About the Victorian Group

mapvic5.gifThe Victorian Group helps members and visitors research their interests in Victoria. Meetings are held regularly and members are encouraged to share their success and problems. Members are alerted to the latest information in books, magazines, Cd, DVD and websites, etc.  New members are welcome.

The Group was formed in May 1986. It celebrated its 25th Anniversary in May 2011.

The current Convenor is Edwina Shooter.

Previous Convenors were: 

  • Lorna and Bill Bell 1986-1987
  • Elizabeth Rummins 1987-1998
  • Tony Scott 1998-2001
  • Fred Grosvenor and Keith Fellowes 2002 with Keith staying on as Convenor until 2011.

 Members are encouraged to contact the Genealogical Society of Victoria Inc, the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies Inc, the Port Phillip Pioneers' Group Inc.,  1850’s Group, State and Federal archives, state and local libraries, historical and genealogical societies in Victoria to broaden their knowledge.

Meetings 

Meetings are usually held quarterly in February, May, August and October, with 2 extra days for workshops in April and September. All meetings will be held at May Street Bayswater on designated Saturdays. Bring along your questions and research successes. Members are always on hand to help newcomers.

WAGS Victorian Interest Group Forum

If you would like get an answer to a burning question on any topic of interest on Victorian Research post your question on the WAGS Victorian SIG Forum . One our members will answer as soon as possible.

WAGS Members are already registered and just need to log in to post a message. Members of the public are also welcome, but need to register before being able to post, read the Forum FAQ's to find out how.


WAGS Library Catalogue - Available on all computers at WAGS Library. The library exchanges journals with several Victorian genealogical and related Societies (shelved at P994.5)

Family History Research Guide for Victoria - UPDATED EDITION published by the Victorian Group. Available for sale from WAGS Bookshop $12.50.

Projects  - The group was building up a collection of newspapers on microfilm from the 1850's, concentrating on Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong. However, with the increased number of titles available on the Trove.nla.gov.au website, this project has been temporarily discontinued.
