About the Victorian Group

mapvic5.gifThe Victorian Group was Formed in May 1986. The group's firstCo-Convenors were the late, Lorna and Bill Bell. The Group was popularwith WAGS members, reflecting the high proportion of forebears who hadpassed through Victoria prior to descendants settling in WesternAustralia. Elizabeth Rummins took over leadership of the group inSeptember 1987, a position she held for 11 years.

In 1998 Tony Scott took over the helm until the end of 2001 when herelocated to Victoria. Fred Grosvernor and Keith Fellowes took over asconvenors in 2002.

The group celebrated its 20th Anniversary in May 2006 with new and long time members in attendance.

The group holds over 3000 Victorian BMD certificates fully indexed.

The group helps members and visitors research their interests inVictoria, with a growing wealth of material now available to familyhistorians.

The group has contacts with the Genealogical Society of Victoria Inc,the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies Inc, the Port PhillipPioneers' Group Inc and the 1850’s group, to broaden our knowledge ofVictorian Genealogy and History. Persons with heritage in these areasare encouraged to join.

Meetings 

Meetings are usually held quarterly in February, May, August and October, with 2extra days for workshops in April and September.All meetings will be held at May Street Bayswater on designated Saturdays. Bring along your questions and research successes. Members are alwayson hand to help newcomers.

Helpful Hints - VIC

WAGS Library Catalogue - Available on the reception computer at WAGS Library, and soon to be available to members on the Internet.

Family History Research Guide for Victoria - UPDATED EDITION published by the Victorian Group. Available for sale from WAGS Bookshop $12.50.

LEGS - A members only photocopy service where LEGS will do the walking and the photocopying.  YOU have to SUPPLY the relevant information and details e.g. Passenger Lists, Probate, Wills and Land Records. Contact convenors for further information.

Projects in Progress - The group is building up a collection of newspapers on microfilm from the 1850's, concentrating on Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong.

NEWS - Victorian State Records have moved to new premises in 99 Sheil Street, North Melbourne.
