The Perth Gazette and Western Australian Journal 1833

Compiled by Graham Bown our Projects Officer.

Newspapers have played a very important role in the history of Western Australia since The Fremantle Journal & General Advertiser commenced in February 1830 as a single sheet of handwritten copy. This was eight months after the Colony was founded. It was edited and published by James A Gardner of Fremantle. Over the next three years, a number of newspapers were produced - The Western Australian Gazette & General Advertiser in 1830, The West Australian Gazette 1830 and 1831, The Western Australian Chronicle & Perth Gazette 1831, The Fremantle Observer, Perth Gazette and Western Australian Journal 1831, The Western Australian 1831, and The Western Australian Colonial News, 1832.

Lieutenant Governor Stirling imported a Stanhope Press from England. Charles MacFaull, who was on good terms with Stirling, was given permission to use this machine for the sum of 75 pounds a year on his undertaking to publish Government notices as well as certain other departmental matters, and to supply 20 copies of each issue of The Perth Gazette and Western Australian Journal to the Colonial Secretary.

Colonial Secretary's WA Inward Correspondence Index 1829-1832

Compiled by Graham Bown.

The Colonial Secretary kept two registers of inward and outward letters. Inward Correspondence (Accession 36) contains many letters from private individuals, either collectively or individually, as well as from Government Officials, and contains a number of proclamations and instructions relating to the administration and structure of the Colony. Originally the letters were pigeon-holed at Government House in approximate date order, and later chronologically within subject or department headings. When the letters were aquired by the State Archives, they were bound into 906 volumes and consequently microfilmed in the order in which they were bound. Outwards Correspondence (Accession 49) was summarised into letterbooks, which were compiled in date order, and are also now held in the State Record Office.

Cost of $25 (plus $5 postage)
