About the North of England Group

The North of England group's interests cover half the counties of England - from Northumberland and Cumbria in the far north, to the northern counties of the Midlands - and all are welcome.

We have been going strong for 10 years and we are starting our second decade with a logo of our own. In red, white and blue (for England) it is the Tudor rose (a combination of the red rose of Lancaster and the white rose of York) inside a cog, symbol of the industrial revolution that began in the north of England in the second half of the 18th century.

Starting with our first meeting of 2012, on Sunday 11th March at 10.00, we will be following a program which is designed to improve our knowledge about this vast area and its people, and give more members the opportunity to contribute.

Fellowship is an important part of our meetings, and we begin with morning tea, which gives us all an opportunity to mix and mingle informally. After a short meeting to discuss any matters of business, anyone who wants to can give a brief overview of their recent research, whether they've reached some milestones or are stymied by a brick wall or two. At each meeting three members will give short talks or presentations on an aspect of the north - its people, places and proceedings. As the library is open in the afternoon, once the meeting is finished you can move next door to check out that little think you've been promising yourself you will look up!

Even if you are not from the north yourself, but have ancestors who lived or worked in the northern counties, we would be delighted if you joined us. Please email us with any enquiries.
