The North of England group's interests cover half the counties of England - from Northumberland and Cumbria in the far north, to the northern counties of the Midlands - and all who have ancestral connections to those counties are welcome.
We have been going strong for 10 years and are starting our second decade with our own logo. In red, white and blue (for England) it is the Tudor rose (a combination of the red rose of Lancaster and the white rose of York) inside a cog, symbol of the industrial revolution that began in the north of England in the second half of the 18th century.
Our meetings are held on the 2nd Sundays of March, June, September and December, starting at 10.00am with morning tea. We follow a program designed to improve our knowledge about this vast area and its people, and give all members the opportunity to contribute.
After a short meeting to discuss any matters of business, members are invited to give a brief overview of their recent research, whether they've found some stepping stones or are stymied by a dry stone wall or two. At each meeting three members give short talks or presentations on an aspect of the north - its people, places and proceedings. As the library is open in the afternoon, once the meeting is finished you can move next door to check out that little thing you've been promising yourself you will look up!
We produce a quarterly newsletter - the BYGONE TIMES - which is circulated by email and back copies published on this website.
Even if you are not from the north yourself, but have ancestors who lived or worked in the northern counties, we would be delighted if you joined us. Please email us with any enquiries.

Items of interest from recent NESIG meetings
June 2012
Three new attendees, along with a score or so of our regulars, braved some very wintry weather indeed to attend our meeting. A hot cuppa and a sweet treat heralded a short business meeting before contributions by our members. Several more members then updated us on their research and we were pleased to hear of more 'stepping stones' than 'stone walls'. Three short talks followed - on the history of Fountain's and Rievaulx Abbeys in north Yorkshire; the rise of an Isle of Man family to naval prominence from humble beginnings; and the adventures of an ancestor at the court of kings during the time of the Wars of the Roses. Some of our members used their time after the meeting by researching in the library - always a positive move.
March 2012
A new Convenor and a new logo greeted the members as they arrived for morning tea at 10.00am. A short meeting to cover matters of business was followed by a 'stepping stones or stone walls' segment when several members updated us on both research problems and successes. Three short talks followed - one on famines, one on the early history of Leyland Motors, and one on Lindisfarne (Holy Island)
December 2011
A welcome to members and visitors was followed by a short AGM, which saw the election of a new Convenor and re-election of the Treasurer and Editor. It was decided not to purchase Godfrey's maps but to put some money towards a banner for the group. A talk on the Viking history of Britain was followed by a light Christmas luncheon and fellowship.
Minutes to come
September 2011
Some discussion at the meeting surrounded identifying appropriate resources to purchase, relevant to our North of England genealogical research. It was suggested that Godfrey's maps might be a good acquisition, being relevant and inexpensive. It was further suggested that the WAGS Librarian be requested to identify other media that is not currently in the WAGS collection that would be useful for us.
