We run a series of FREE informal lunchtime talks and guided discussions on various topics in Unit 4, 48 May St, Bayswater.  You do not need to book to attend - just bring your lunch and come along (tea and coffee provided).  All are welcome.

Genie Chatter

These sessions are led by experienced WAGS members and mainly concentrate on informing you about how to get the most out of your membership, and hints and tips on how and where to research.

  They run from 12.00 - 1.30pm on the 2nd Monday of most months.

   

April 8    WAGS library resources catalogue

This is referred to at WAGS as 'Alice'. Find Alice, and use her to effectively search the amazing number of library resources available. What's more, find out how to interpret what you find. This session will provide you with all the answers.

May 13    Ups and Downs of using a professional researcher

Hear some tales, and join in the discussion about the peaks and troughs, blessings and pitfalls of getting a professional researcher to do some work for you. Who's good and who's not so good - and how can you find out before you have already committed?

June 10    Showcasing an Ancestor

Have you reached that "certain" point in your research? How do you know? How do you decide what to do with what you have and how do you go about putting research into a format that your relatives will be interested in looking at.

July 8   Social networking

Do you feel a bit of a twit when you hear about all the new mediums like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter? How can they possibly elate to genealogy? You might be surprised!

August 12    Maps for family historians

Are you looking for an elusive ancestor? Could that vital clue be somewhere on a map? Come along and find out what sort of maps are available, where to locate them, and how to read and understand them.

Outside the Box 

Accomplished family historians, researchers and professionals in related areas, share their experiences in an informal setting. These talks are not just for WAGS members, but for anyone interested in the topic.

 The talks run from 11.00am - 12.30pm on the 4th Sunday of most months.

April 28    The Great Plague of London
What was it like to be living during the Great Plague of 1665, and what caused it? Social historian Lesley Silvester will explain that while other epidemic diseases regularly took their toll, it was plague that created the most notoriety.
May 26    "Gumnut Misery"
Michael Gregg, Curator of Maritime History at the Western Australian Museum, will entertain you with stories about ships and the shipboard life of immigrants coming to Western Australia.
